We are opening a vending machine kiosk: What you can learn from us!

When we opened a vending machine kiosk in Neunburg and Nittenau, it quickly became clear to us that the concept of a 24/7 accessible point of sale is in tune with the spirit of the times. People want to shop flexibly, regardless of store opening hours, staff shortages, or store size. The reactions were overwhelmingly positive. Many customers use the vending machine stores for small errands, spontaneous purchases in the evening, or as a convenient solution on their way home.

What we have found is that vending machine kiosks not only work in cities, but also offer great opportunities in rural areas in particular. Especially in areas where local supply is weakening or shops close early, such concepts fill a real gap in supply. At the same time, it is also evident in urban areas that 24/7 kiosks are extremely well received. The combination of low operating costs, a flexible product range, and permanent availability makes the vending machine kiosk an interesting option.

In this article, we would like to share our experiences with you: from the idea to implementation, from choosing a location to stocking the vending machine. If you are thinking about opening a vending machine kiosk yourself, you will find valuable insights, practical tips, and advice on what you should pay particular attention to—whether in the city or in the countryside.

What exactly is a vending kiosk?

A vending machine kiosk is an automated point of sale that allows customers to purchase everyday goods around the clock—without staff and without a traditional storefront. Unlike a traditional kiosk or retail store, this concept is based entirely on self-service. Customers select their products directly from the machine and pay contactless or in cash, depending on the equipment.

The range of business models extends from simple snack and beverage vending machines to fully-fledged 24/7 kiosks offering a wide range of food, drugstore items, regional products, or even non-food items. In some cases, these are also referred to as e-kiosks, which utilize modern technologies such as touch displays, app connectivity, or remote monitoring.

Market potential and target groups

Demand is particularly evident among younger target groups. At our locations in Neunburg and Nittenau, it is mainly schoolchildren and trainees who use the service during breaks, on their way home, or in the evenings. For them, the vending machine kiosk is an easy way to get snacks, drinks, or small everyday items quickly and cheaply without having to travel long distances or wait in line.

Local residents also use the vending machine kiosk regularly, especially in the evenings. Since many supermarkets and shops close at 8 p.m., the 24/7 kiosk is a convenient way to quickly pick up essentials. Snacks and drinks were particularly popular. Compared to gas stations, which are often the only alternative late at night, the vending machine kiosk not only offers a wider selection of products, but also lower prices.

Technology and equipment

For the technical implementation of our vending kiosks, we rely on vending machines from the manufacturer TCN, an international supplier with many years of experience in the field of vending solutions. The vending machines are particularly impressive in terms of their price-performance ratio. Starting at just €4000-5000, you can find your first options for snack vending machines and beverage vending machines in our online shop.

Product range and inventory management

Snacks, drinks, vapes, and so-called secret packs—small surprise packages with varying contents that generate additional curiosity and surprise—work particularly well in our vending machines.

The merchandise management can be efficiently controlled with the system used. As a rule, refilling once a week was sufficient to ensure continuous availability. Using the Nayax system, we were able to monitor sales figures and fill levels digitally at any time, thus avoiding unnecessary trips or bottlenecks.

Our learnings

The ongoing operation of our vending machine kiosks has yielded several key insights that are crucial for long-term successful implementation. One of the most important points is protection against vandalism. We integrated permanently installed surveillance cameras at an early stage – not only as a deterrent, but also to document any incidents. The mere presence of the cameras has a preventive effect and has significantly improved the sense of security on site.

Cleanliness is equally important. A well-maintained appearance has a significant impact on the shopping experience. Regular cleaning around the vending machines—especially in the entrance area and on the machines themselves—is therefore absolutely essential. This is the only way to ensure that the kiosk remains attractive to customers and is perceived as a reputable shopping alternative.

In addition, it has been shown that well-structured inventory and purchasing management is essential. Those who do not plan ahead run the risk of not having important products in stock or tying up capital unnecessarily due to excess inventory. Striking the right balance between availability and storage costs is a critical success factor – especially with a changing product range or weather- and season-dependent products.
